July 2016 Artist of the Month
Ruben Caballero was born in Las Cruces, New Mexico and currently resides in Claremont. A self-taught artist, he began drawing at the early age of eight when he was diagnosed with Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis. Because he was unable to play like the other children, he turned to art as an escape from his physical challenges. Ruben’s desire as an artist is to impart a little something to others through artistic expression.
"If I can make a connection with a subject matter through a past memory, or if a particular subject can inspire me to paint or draw it, then I know I can bring a little of the magic of that connection to touch someone else. If I can achieve that, then I have done my job as an artist."
Ruben works in various mediums, but primarily prefers pen and ink and watercolors. Much of his work includes familiar landmarks in Claremont Village.
